Commemorating the two-year anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina & Rita

As the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s terrible devastation approaches, and like so many impacted in our state, at the Outreach Center we feel sadness reflecting upon the lives and property destroyed by the storm--and hopeful optimism for the rebuilding and recovery of our battered and bruised Louisiana.

Since that time, our team employed 41 evacuees to help other evacuees and enlisted the help of 319 volunteers who reached out with compassion tirelessly to personally provide:

• Helping 1,656 households (5,796 evacuees) access financial aid)
• Giving 730,000 lbs of food, water, personal supplies to 75 churches, shelters, and private homes housing groups of evacuees— with 4,576 evacuees served. (The value of the goods received by evacuees: a staggering $1.56 million.)
• Helping 399 households (1,017 people) with case management and financial assistance for unmet needs access housing, employment, transportation, mental health care, substance abuse recovery through our “Transitional Recovery Action Center for Katrina/Rita” (T.R.A.C.K.)
  -70% were displaced by Katrina, 30% are impacted by Hurricane Rita
  -74% are women, 26% are men

We can’t do it without your help. Please consider partnering with us and other grassroots nonprofit organizations—community nonprofits were serving diligently before the storms and while national relief agencies moved on to the next disaster, we remain here to help people pick up the pieces and rebuild day by day. Louisiana nonprofits have dipped into meager reserves to help our citizens—and we can’t continue to help without the resources to do so.
